Automation and artificial intelligence in the law firm: what to delegate and what not to
Technology for the repetitive, the lawyer for what requires judgment.
Technology is already part of everyday legal practice: e-filing, digital signatures, practice management systems. What's new is the scale — automation and artificial intelligence tools can take over a significant share of repetitive work.
Where automation helps most
- Capturing and organizing court notices and publications;
- Calculating and recording deadlines, with alerts to the person in charge;
- Document templates filled in with case and client data;
- Reminders and tasks triggered by case stage;
- Periodic reports for clients and management.
These are activities with clear rules, high volume and little room for interpretation — ideal ground for machines.
Where artificial intelligence can support
- Summaries of decisions and long documents;
- First drafts of texts, to be reviewed;
- Organizing research and arguments;
- Language review and standardization.
What should not be delegated
- The strategy of the case;
- The final check of facts, legal grounds and citations — AI tools can produce incorrect information that looks convincing;
- The technical and ethical responsibility for what is signed and filed;
- The relationship of trust with the client.
Confidentiality and data precautions
- Check where the data is stored and whether the tool uses your content to train models;
- Avoid entering personal data and confidential information into services without adequate contractual guarantees;
- Define an internal usage policy, aligned with data protection law and the duty of confidentiality;
- Follow the Bar's guidance on the use of AI in legal practice.
Start small
Choose one repetitive process — for example, the daily triage of court notices — automate it, measure the time saved, and only then move on to the next.
The best technology is the one that gives lawyers back time to do what only they can do: think through the case.
